A headset mic...a computer...and a sound card is all you need...really!

Don't get us wrong...You can use all the outboard USB and Firewire equipment you want, but if you don't want to spend the bucks on all that stuff you don't have to. Actually you don't really need the headset, just the mic. A small analog microphone like you'd buy at RadioShack is fine. How does a $20 mic sound? Listen to one here. This recording was made with Podcast Station using its Automatic Gain Control feature which brings up the volume of your mic when you talk low and compresses the mic volume when you talk too loud. AGC's cost anywhere from $200-$800. This is a professional, adjustable AGC and it's included in Podcast Station.

And, you don't need a mixer. Podcast Station's ability to mix music and sounds with your mic is like having your own professional control board to produce a professional sounding recording.

The Minimum You Have to Have

An analog microphone that can plug into your sound card
Windows 2000 or XP
Pentium 3 or higher
DirectX 9 or higher
Soundcard (audio device) with current WDM/DirectSound audio drivers

The easiest way to check all of these conditions is with the Microsoft DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Click the "Start" button in the lower lefthand corner of the taskbar, select "Run" from the popup menu, then type in "dxdiag" and hit Enter. Your operating system version, installed service packs, and DirectX version are noted on the first window. Read the information carefully. If you see that you are running DirectX 8 or less, we highly recommend you visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx, download the latest version and install it on your computer.

The diagnostic tool also displays information about hardware devices on your system, with a separate tab for each device at the top of the window. Each audio device driver is represented by a "Sound" tab. Clicking these tabs shows you the device name, the driver type (WDM drivers are clearly noted as "WDM", not "Emulated"), and the date of the driver. If the driver is more than two years old we highly recommend you visit the website of the soundcard vendor and download their latest WDM/DirectSound driver for your device.
